Stupid

You know, it doesn’t help if you have a tsunami warning system and don’t use it.

Seems I’m becoming a hurricane blogger…

Our friends in Oz are getting hit by another major nasty - cyclone Monica. Via Coalition of the Swilling. Let’s hope it weakens considerably before it hits Darwin.

Update Tues 4/25: Looks like it turned south a bit and hit an area with very low population. But… it’s expected to cross land and come out to sea again - so it could restrengthen and threaten the other coast.

A salute to our Australian friends on this Anzac Day.

You have my sympathy, mates.

Thousands ordered to flee cyclone path

Residents are fleeing parts of far north Queensland in the path of Cyclone Larry as authorities compare the violent storm to America’s Hurricane Katrina.

Larry could intensify to a category five - the most intense rating for a cyclone - by the time it hits between Innisfail and Cardwell, south of Cairns, about 7.30am (AEST) Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

See Tim Blair for more details. (Check out the post after that one also.)

In case we need it. (And we probably will.) Aus Salvation Army

Update - looks bad. Check here for more - Cyclone Larry: The Aftermath.

Quick update: Wilma

It’s a bit wild outside - but too dark to take pictures. My parents’ place (in South Ft Myers) still has power and phone. so far. From reports coming out of Cape Coral, it’s likely I’m without power - will see later today. It’s making land fall south of us - but with an eye the width of that one, we are still getting some pretty strong winds and the usual sideways rain. I’ll see if I can get some pics up later (if we still have power here). But it looks like I’ll be personally safe, so don’t y’all worry.

State of the Blog

Still in the bullseye area and bugging out soon. Will be local, still in the bullseye area but further inland - and in a place more hurricane-resistant. Good luck to everyone in the path. If you feel like a disaster donation, donate a bit for Mexico, too - they really got battered. I’ll try to get a message left here when the hurricane passes. I’ve set up a guest blogger account and I’ll see if I can get hold of someone who will post a message to it (assuming I can find a working phone) if I don’t have access.

Trying to reason with hurricane season (yet again)

Ack. (As of this posting, there’s a large bullseye on my area.) Update: As of 5am EDT, Oct 19, it is a category 5 (not expected to stay a category 5 - we hope they are right).

Mother Nature is a b*tch.

Pakistan, India Search for Survivors After 7.6 Quake

Pakistan and India struggled to recover victims after the worst earthquake in the northern region of Kashmir in 100 years killed more than 19,000 people and left many homeless amid collapsed buildings and aftershocks.

In Pakistan, 19,136 people were confirmed killed by yesterday’s magnitude 7.6 earthquake, 11,000 of them in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir alone, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao told reporters today. The minister said 42,397 people were wounded. In India, more than 500 people died in Kashmir Valley, Shaukat Malik, senior superintendent of police, said in a phone interview from Srinagar, the state capital.

That’s as of this posting. I used the Bloomberg link above because they are updating that page with the newest information.

The Moderate Voice has an extensive news roundup, including local blog reports and other bloggers who are covering the story.
