Putting the Pieces Together

Before the jetliners made their fateful rendezvous with the World Trade Center, like most Americans I was relatively ignorant about Islam. I knew Muslims had a Book and considered themselves “children of Abraham”. I knew they prayed towards Mecca, and worshipped in mosques. I knew their Prophet was called Mohammed. I remembered that Malcolm X was a Muslim, and that the Crusades were initiated to liberate Jerusalem from Islam during the Middle Ages. I knew that Islamic fundamentalists had taken over the government of Afghanistan in the 1990s. But that was about it.

I’ve learned a lot about Islam since September 11th, 2001.

He certainly has.

Note to the Solipsist[1] Muslims in Malaysia

This cartoon is not insulting your prophet. It is insulting some of his followers. Specifically the ones who, like you, are going nuts over cartoons. I think you each should be told some facts. YOU are not your prophet. Your prophet is long gone. YOU are just a nutter who thinks no-one should be allowed to say anything you don’t like. Get over it already.

[1]Solipsism: The theory or view that the self is the only reality. (Which is, I believe, a heresy in Islam.)

The article that inspired this rant is here. Thanks to wits0 for the link.

Works for me.

Not quite safe for work (depends on your boss) cartoon commentary on the Muslim reaction to the cartoons. Here (Flash - will take a while if you are on dialup.) Found via the comments at the indispensible Rantings of a Sandmonkey. The author of that blog, btw, has quite a bit to say on the subject himself (just scroll).

I will say that I pretty much agree with what the purple character in the cartoon has to say. Though I think I would have made a bit more distinction between ‘Muslims’ and the supporters and purveyors of hiraba (terrorism).

Are We Really at War With All Islam?

I certainly hope not. Dafydd ab Hugh points out what we would have to do to win such a war. In (verbally) graphic detail. Note that he thinks the proponents of the “at war with all Islam” side do want a military war - like WWII (I agree, from what I’ve been hearing) and that is the scenario he paints.

Cartoons update

If you’ve been following the controversy closely, you’ll know that there were some fake (and much more insulting) cartoons added ( by the group who went on tour to drum up outrage) to the ones that Jyllands-Posten actually published. One of them has been traced - turns out it isn’t a cartoon at all but a picture of a man in a pig-squealing contest.

Now, if it turns out it was actually the touring “Imams” who faked this picture, will people riot against them and threaten them with beheading?

Buy Danish

See here

An Islamic cultural organisation has called upon its 51 member states to boycott Denmark in response to cartoons of the prophet Mohammed printed three months ago in national daily Jyllands-Posten.

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) stated on its webpage that it sought a condemnation of ‘the aggressive campaign waged against Islam and its Prophet’ by Jyllands-Posten.

Abdulaziz Othman al-Twaijri, the organisation’s secretary general, reportedly told Arabic TV station Al-Arabiya that member states would impose a boycott until an apology was offered for the drawings.

If they stand their ground, and refuse to ban free speech in Denmark, I suggest we might want to buy Danish imports for a while…

Sometimes, intolerance is a GOOD thing.

Iran tells West to be tolerant of Holocaust views

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s denial of the Holocaust is a matter for academic discussion and the West should be more tolerant of his views, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

I think the phrase “just say no” applies to that request…

Must read.

The radical loser

I don’t agree with the conclusion - but the analysis is excellent. This is a long one - but very much worth the read.

Terror in the Streets

At a time when all eyes are on London it might be instructive to view a slice of the Arab press this week.

Many of the leftest moonbats and appeasement monkeys would have you believe yesterdays strike in London is fueled by America’s foreign policies and Prime Minister Blair’s steadfast refusal to abandon America or President Bush.

But what truly fuels the terror in the streets and kills innocents by the thousands? The major portion of it comes from hate and an idealology of hate for anything in the West. The jihadist cut throats desire is to have every daughter in the West uneducated and circumsized. They want every Western symbol destroyed and reverted to somewhere in the 2nd century as was Afghanistan prior to the defeat of the Taliban. Victor Hanson nails it when he adds this.

Failed states in the Middle East — autocratic, statist, unfree, intolerant of women and other religions — blame the West for their self-inflicted miseries. Sometimes they are theocratic, like the late Taliban or the current Iranian mullahs. But more often they are dictatorial like the Syrians, Pakistanis, Saudis, or Egyptians, who all, in varying degrees and in lieu of reform, have come to accommodations with the terrorists to shift popular anguish onto the West and the Jews.

That is the Petri dish of Islamic fascism, an evil that will only disappear when the dictatorships that allow it or nourish it do as well. Whether the jihadists are in Iraq, the United States, or Europe, they all share a sick notion that someone else (the decadent Western oppressor and unbeliever) is responsible for their own poverty and backwardness rather than the fundamentalism, corruption, bias, and intolerance endemic to the Middle East.

One of the strongest jihadist cut throats allies is the Islamic Press. The Arabic Weekly Al-Ahram is a prime example. This week they have choosen to publish an account of an Al-Azhar approved 19th century biography of Prophet Mohamed. Nothing unusual in that, except, the author is a distant relative of President Bush.

Apparently the relationship to the current Bush isn’t in dispute but frankly I could care less. The only relevance a century old tome has today is Al-Azhar and Al-Ahram attempting to smear President Bush with a very wide and tenuous brush. No better example is this passage from the Al-Ahram article:

Islamic thinker Abdel-Rahman Abdallah El-Sheikh, who translated the text and provided the additional commentary, said, “the book is particularly interesting because it is part of the Library of Congress’s collection, and was written by a fifth generation great grandfather of [President] Bush; as such, it provides a clue of how the world’s ‘emperor’ thinks.”

Someone tell me how that provides any “clue?” Is President Bush channeling his five times removed great grandfather?

Or is it another example of the Arabic press dredging up anything and everything to divert attention from the real problems in the Arab world?

I know where I lay my bets.

Well, well… never thought I’d be saying this:

Bravo Quebec!

Quebec has rejected the use of Islamic tribunals, which can be used to settle family disputes, in the province.

In a unanimous vote Thursday, the Quebec legislature passed a motion against allowing sharia to be used in the legal system.

(Emphasis mine.) Unanimous. Good. More like this, please.
