So is she in jail and charged with threateneing conduct or aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, this savage little old lady? You can’t let a granny pull a kitchen knife on a helpless intruder like that and get away with it…she might have hurt him or caused him severe emotional distress! (Sarcasm off)

Sgt. di Virgilio may well be brave and devoted. But it sounds like the other two soldiers were just as brave. However, only she got the medals. Also what if her severely limited upper body strength and general, female fragility became an issue, such as in heavy lifting, carrying bodies to safety etc? Let the women be ‘corpersons’ or medics. To go further, to my mind, is just PC drivel.

Sigh. There are women who have more upper body strength than most men their size. Qualification should be based on the ability to do the job, not the sex.

For all you know, the lady could bench-press you.

Women should be able to do anything they are capable of, with no special allowances made.

However, I don’t want to arbitrarily ignore one potential argument against sending women into combat: the idea that the men in the unit will attempt to “protect” them, to the detriment of the unit. I don’t find it a compelling argument, but it cannot be dismissed out of hand without debate.

Weirdly, one of the lefty/feminist arguments for putting women in combat units (I wish I could remember where I read it or who proposed it) was exactly that: people would be more hesitant to use the military if girls were going into harm’s way. I find the irony of it delicious.

I know a bit about it as my father went into Normandy on D+3, fought through the hedgerows and was wounded at St Lo and then again during the Ardennes Offensive (ie, Battle of the Bulge).
Like most combat veterans, Dad did not talk much but the tales he DID tell were quite engrossing.

Interesting that two years earlier the Battle of Midway, the turning point in the Pacific, was also fought in June (4th-7th) (1942).

Erin Libby was severly injured when her convoy was attacked by a suicide car bomber on June 24th. Several of her fellow soldiers were killed.

Please pray for Erin and her fellow soldiers.

As I noted in my link to that image, the Pueblo crew were sending a similar message in images released by the North Koreans. I don’t recall specific instances, but I think the same is true of images of POWs in North Vietnam.

It is important to understand that the message is subtler than it would be in a civilian context.
