Pakistan, India Search for Survivors After 7.6 Quake
Pakistan and India struggled to recover victims after the worst earthquake in the northern region of Kashmir in 100 years killed more than 19,000 people and left many homeless amid collapsed buildings and aftershocks.
In Pakistan, 19,136 people were confirmed killed by yesterday’s magnitude 7.6 earthquake, 11,000 of them in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir alone, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao told reporters today. The minister said 42,397 people were wounded. In India, more than 500 people died in Kashmir Valley, Shaukat Malik, senior superintendent of police, said in a phone interview from Srinagar, the state capital.
