Trying to reason

Katrina passed us by, but even as a category one, managed to do some major damage on the east coast. And now she’s headed towards New Orleans. As a category FIVE. If you are anywhere in its track… get OUT.

Storm watchers:

These guys are all updating regularly and offering analysis. Keep an eye on them.

I don’t know of anyone hurricane blogging from the area - if I find any that crazy, I’ll add them. If you are that crazy, feel free to leave a comment or trackback - but I’d rather see you safe than blogging.

And if you are IN New Orleans and not leaving… read this and, if that doesn’t convince you, read this (the latter was written last year - when they thought Ivan was going to hit). See also Laughing Wolf - who has more links, including some good disaster preparedness information (not to be ignored - even for those of us who got missed this time.

  1. I read Jeff Masters this morning and nearly croaked. At the bottom is his best case scenario. It’s just too awful… even the best case.

  2. I read it too. I agree.

  3. Kathy, thank you!

We’re blogging as fast a we can. My mother-in-law is stuck in NO and my wife is, reasonably, freaking.

Thanks for keeping up the coverage.

  4. I have family that live in Gretna, across the Mississippi from New Orleans. They are now in Dallas. They tell me that this “B**ch” is going to make the 1900 Galveston storm and Camille look like cake walks.
I have been watching this on NOAA continuous loop radar and it is HUGE and is going to cause flooding in New Orleans proper from Lake Pontchatrain more than from the Mississippi.
A lot of people are trekking to the Superdome. I have been there and it looks like a haven but could turn into a death trap of people are stranded there more than two days. Check out “Instapundit” article “unpleasant thoughts” for that scary scenario.

  5. I hope they let those people out ASAP. That leaky roof is going to be a major problem for anyone who is ill.

  6. I was impressed that some of the emergency people made it fairly blunt to people to get them to leave. One of them even said: “you stay on the coast you are dead.”

Post-storm this is a whole apartment complex that got hammered. The local authorites are saying their deaths were preventable and they were told repeatedly to leave.
