Excellent Essay.

Eric Raymond has a must-read for the left, in which he explains a good bit of how conservatives think and how (and to some extent, why) the left doesn’t get it.

Teaser:

I’ve been reading a new blog called Left2Right, founded in mid-November 2004 as an attempt by a group of left-wing intellectuals to reach out to intelligent people on the right of the American political spectrum. It is indeed a thought-provoking read, but the thoughts they are provoking are not necessarily of the sort they intend.

Also recommended reading for conservatives, since he does some explanation of ‘left-think’ that it would be helpful for you to understand.

Hat tip to Lewis Collard for the link, in his “Odds and Sods” roundup. There are some other good links there too, check it out.

I went to the left2right blog, after reading ESR’s take on it, and I agree with his assessment that “There is too much talk and not enough listening — not enough attempt to engage the Right’s beliefs (as opposed to a comforting left-wing parody of those beliefs).” Still, the fact that left-wing academics are even making an attempt to come to terms with “conservative thought” suggests a belated recognition on their part, that their own world view needs a re-appraisal.

I actually enjoyed that site. Perhaps because I don’t quite understand conservative thought either, I thought they made some good point.
