Such a tolerant religion.

Converts From Islam to Christianity Fear Reprisal

Falls Church, Va. (AP) - Christian converts from Muslim backgrounds gathered in the Washington area to share their unique challenges and fears.

The Washington Times reports that the weekend conference - sponsored in part by the Baptist General Association of Virginia - was conducted under tight security, with participants using assumed names to guard against Muslim retaliation.

Considering that the Islamic punishment for apostacy is death, I don’t doubt a bit that they fear retaliation. The simple non-believers have it easier than converts. They can just pretend to still be Muslims.

The wrapping of a religion, the essential content of a Cult, no less. Clear enough from this alone. For more, even often maligned Wiccans speak with a straight tongue with The Advanced Bonewits’ Cult Danger Evaluation Frame

Yikes. I’d put several of those at 10 for Islam in general (with the exception of the Sufis who score lower). There’s some difference depending on which ‘brand’ of Islam you are talking about. But I’d say they all tend to the high side of the scale

Totally agreed. :) BTW I’m often a little aghasted/annoyed by some unknowledgeable atheists who wear their theism like a badge of pride. These types often parrot the line that “islam has been hijacked”.

In addition to rereading the Quran and wading through some of the Hadiths after 9/11, I also hung around a bunch of Islamic forums, as well as Faith Freedom (I went there for relief…). I’m fairly conversant with the religion.

But I will say most of the Muslims I’ve actually known were moderate (in our sense of the term). The best way to describe them would be as the equivalent of Christians who only go to church on Easter or Christmas. They weren’t really ‘believers’, it was more that they’d been told they were Muslim, had a sort of vague belief in a big God in the sky and knew Mohammed was a prophet. And that’s about all Islam was to them.

The fanatics, of course, would consider them infidels.

Ignorance still makes for them being a disservice to self and more so to others. Problem is they tend to be spoonfed religion, not study it themselves. Everything is so exoteric and mainly just physical observances ; possessing little esoteric substance that enlightens. Such is a state of affair where conformism to uphold the Ummah is all that matters for its own sake. Still in the clutches that definitely suffocates. Every other religion I know of has some avenue to individually enlighten.
