Why do I get the feeling that the Kerry hatred out there, simmering as it’s been for more than three decades, is a lot more potent than Bush hatred, which is in many cases simply a fashion statement by those in Hollywood, SF and Manhatten?

I think you may be right about the Kerry hatred… it’s back by (eminently justifiable) anger, whereas the Bush-hatred seems to be more a matter of not liking his ’style’.
